Year One is an important stepping stone from the Early Years to the Key Stage One curriculum. We work closely with both the Reception and Year Two teachers to ensure a smooth transition between classes. As the year progresses, the children learn to move from self-directed play activities to tasks which require longer periods of concentration. They have increasing opportunities to work  independently, using their initiative to follow their own learning paths.

Our spacious classroom reflects this approach. The role play area is a free-play area, which links directly to our topics. In addition, our interactive classroom-displays encourage the children to explore and experiment across a range of curriculum areas. Our classroom also extends to the outdoors, when the children are encouraged to explore our ‘Welly Area’ in all weathers.

Recent topics have included ‘Farms’, ‘Fantasy Worlds’ and ‘Holidays’, building on the children’s own interests. Several times a year, educational visits are organised to enhance the children’s learning experiences. The school’s holistic approach to learning is reflected in our classroom ethos. We celebrate each child’s contribution to school life. Our Infant nativity is a wonderful occasion for each child to ‘shine’. There is also an annual class assembly which showcases work done in class. Parents are warmly invited to attend both events and are equally welcome to help with class activities.

We have really enjoyed our STEM week. Today we had LEGO in the hall and we all built brilliant models and worked in teams. We also learnt how to code on the Ipads and laptops, with Y4 as our teachers.
