Year 2 is the final year of Key Stage One, which means the children are in their last year of the infants. We prepare children for the bigger challenges of Key Stage Two and work towards a more independent and reflective approach to learning.
Every term we have a new theme, around which most of the learning is planned, and we focus on reading particular authors during the end of the day story. Literacy is always linked to the theme and is taught using quality texts, lots of partner talk, and many opportunities for shared as well as independent writing.
Children continue on the Read Write Inc programme, which they started in Reception. Many of them complete this during Year 2 and we extend their literacy skills during this first hour of the day through structured spelling and writing practice as well as exploring longer chapter books in small groups to improve their comprehension.
Numeracy is taught with a high focus on Number and Calculation with lots of discussion and opportunities for children to extend their learning and prove it!
Most of all, learning is fun! Independent thinking skills, evaluation of their own progress and working collaboratively are all highly valued in Year 2, to enable children to move on confidently to the Juniors.
