With love and faith, we aspire and achieve

Year Three

Hello and welcome to Year 3…and to the juniors! We hope your children will enjoy the new experiences and challenges that Year 3 presents. We are Mrs Farley (Monday and Tuesday class teacher) and Mrs Mirams (Wednesday to Friday class teacher), Mrs Keyse and Mrs Tanner (our teaching assistants). We are really looking forward to getting to know you and working together to ensure your child has a very exciting, enjoyable and productive year.

At St Matthew’s, we have an aspirational curriculum where children persevere and show resilience in all that they do. Our key topics across the year are: Prehistoric Britain, Natural Disasters and The Greeks. Throughout these amazing projects, we work hard to learn and recall our Sticky Knowledge and you can support us with this as we share our 100% Sheets with you every term – these show all the key facts, information and vocabulary that are a focus.

Our curriculum is enhanced by quality, vocabulary-rich and diverse texts such as Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White and The Butterfly Lion by Micheal Morpurgo.

Homework will be set every Wednesday and must be returned by the following Monday. Please ensure children complete the tasks set, as this will further secure and develop their knowledge and understanding. Each week your child will be given spellings (8 per week) and maths homework, which will usually be linked to the week’s learning.

Spellings will include rules of the week, a word clinic word and any high frequency words. In preparation for the statuary Times Tables check in Year 4, children need to be practising their times tables using Times Table Rock Stars and Numbots frequently online, alongside the paper-based maths homework. These programmes can be accessed online using your child’s unique login and password.

Children’s individual reading books will be changed regularly however your child needs to be responsible for letting us know when they need new books. The expectation for reading is to aim for 5 reads per week with an adult, who will comment and sign their child’s reading record, each week. Please remind your child to put their old books in the tray inside the classroom when appropriate. Please remember that all types of reading are valued and re-reading books is beneficial to build up fluency and confidence in word reading. After reading with your child, we recommend encouraging them to retell the key events of the text in their own words as this will check and improve their understanding. Reading records will be checked every Monday. Your child will be read with weekly in school.

PE will take place every Monday and Wednesday. Our main PE day is Wednesday so please make sure that your child only wears their PE kit in then. Don’t forget a black tracksuit bottoms, especially on colder days. For Mondays, they will just need to wear trainers with their usual school uniform.

Please do not hesitate to contact us on Class Dojo if you have any questions.

Thank you for all your help and support.
