With love and faith, we aspire and achieve

Year Two

Dear parents / carers,

Welcome back to school and welcome to Year 2! The classroom is ready, and we can’t wait to see all of the children tomorrow!

PE will take place twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please can all children wear their school PE kit to school on Wednesday and trainers with uniform on Friday. PE kits can include tracksuit bottoms (black) as the weather gets colder. Long hair should be tied back for all sports and earrings covered.

Mrs Carpenter will teach the class on a Tuesday afternoon when Mr Burley has planning time and Mrs Webb is our class TA and will be with the class every morning. Mrs Cann will support the class on a Tuesday afternoon and Mrs Keyes will support the whole class on a Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Allan will continue to work in Year 2 too!

Year 2 homework

Homework will continue this year and as before, your child will be set new homework every week.

It will be handed out on a Wednesday to be returned to school by the following Monday. Your child should be able to work independently on his/her homework but if they need help from you, please make a note in their homework book. There will be three short pieces of homework each week:

SPELLINGS – There will be eight words to learn each week. Tests will be on Monday mornings. There will be four words from a recently taught spelling rule, together with four words from the Year 2 statutory spelling list. We are providing you with the statutory word list so that you are able to monitor your child’s progress and support them with these tricky words as the year goes on.

READING – your child will be given two books each week from school to work through which help with their phonics and fluency. We will change the books when we hear your child read each week. It is important to continue to hear your child read at least five times a week – even if they prefer not to – as this aids fluency and understanding. Just ten minutes reading daily makes a huge difference to their comprehension and vocabulary. Please could you record when you hear your child read in their reading record, and if there is anything that you have noticed which you feel the teacher should know about your child’s reading.

MATHS
– there will be a piece of maths each week. This will be practise of a newly learnt skill in class.

Wishing everyone a great year ahead,

Mr Burley, Mrs Webb and Mrs Allan.
