Dear Parents,
We hope you have had a restful summer. We had a wonderful time getting to know your children during the Stay and Play sessions in July and are very excited to be welcoming you all to St Matthew’s and the Reception Class next week.
The school week is packed full of exciting learning opportunities to support learning across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. We use a topic-based approach to explore learning and source books to inspire the children’s interests in all curriculum areas. You will be able to find information about each term’s learning on our class page on the website and ClassDojo. ClassDojo log in details will be sent to you.
The children will be learning a new sound in Phonics daily. To support them, we will send home reading books that match and practise the sounds they have learned that week. We will change their book weekly and listen to them read too, so please ensure these are sent in daily with their yellow reading diary. It is important to read daily with your child. Please record your comments each time in the reading diary.
Your child will also have a phonics book to take home each day. This will have the daily sound inside for you to practise with your child. We will run a workshop this term to explain more about phonics and support you with the correct enunciation of the speech sounds – they can be tricky!
We love to inspire children to read for pleasure at St Matthew’s, so children can also choose a library book to share with you for pleasure. Please ensure these are brought back to school, so your child can borrow a different one.
The children will gain maths skills daily through activities using number, counting, shape and measure. We encourage the children to problem solve and explain as they explore the exciting maths provision in the classroom. Your child can access maths games using Numbots. Your child will have their own log in details to practise their number skills at home. These will be sent to you.
Your child will have PE each Wednesday afternoon. Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Wednesday.
Your child will be having an extremely busy day at school, and we know they may feel tired when they get home, therefore, the expectation for homework in Reception is to:
If there are any questions or concerns at any point during the term, please do not hesitate to come and see us in the mornings or after school. If we are not available at that time, please contact us via ClassDojo and we will respond as soon as we can.
Kind regards,
Mrs Shelly Collins, Mrs Becky Spencer and Mrs Sarah Strachan
