Foundation Stage Curriculum in the EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum consists of the following key areas of learning. These form Early Learning Goals which each child is assessed against at the end of the EYFS -

We use a topic-based approach within the EYFS to teach the wider curriculum (areas in bold). Our topics include ‘Woodland Adventures’, ‘Superheroes/People Who Help Us’ and ‘Growing is Great’.

English Curriculum in the EYFS

English in the EYFS provides the children with the opportunity to apply the learning and knowledge taught in Phonics. They are immersed in different genres of writing throughout the year including –

Labels
Lists (e.g. shopping list)
Character descriptions
WANTED posters
Instructions
Story writing

There are also taught key skills such as using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops more consistently. There are also writing opportunities in every area of the children’s Learning Through Play for them to practise their writing skills independently and within different contexts.
